General Information

Since the establishment of Cheryl’s children home five years ago, the founders have been using their own and meager resources from development partners to run the center and cater for the children needs. At the moment the center caters for 200 children, 61 living at the orphanage and the rest placed under the foster home program. The children are aged between 5 years to 16 depend entirely on what the center can provide for their livelihood. Despite the budget constraints, the home has changed the lives of many children and tremendous improvement on many aspects of child development (physical, emotional and spiritual) has been achieved thus far.

During the process of strategic planning, Cheryl’s children home realized the urgent need for long term plan on how to provide education for those rehabilitated children. Over the past years, the home has worked with this category of children raising them to secondary school level. The cost of paying for their education at the secondary school level has been high and is still rising

Current Setting and Circumstances

Because of the ever rising cost of school fees, there has been a need for an alternative way of providing secondary school education to these needy children. Through a standing development committee, Cheryl’s has resolved to establish a secondary school that will be affiliated to the orphanage, whose main goal will be to accommodate the orphans, provide them with Christian secondary education at reasonable cost.

The current operational strategy of depending on government and commercial schools is no longer tenable. The main reason being, costs of sending these kids to such schools is too prohibitive and some of these children are still undergoing rehabilitation, hence need to be handled with care. Since these children have a long history of abuse, it is only fair to raise them in an institution where they can be understood, and the workers are more sensitive to the individual needs of these children. This will only take place in a school under the management of Cheryl’s whose teachers have been sensitized.
